When I was still working as Vice President in one of a
trading company that import, exports and distributes various products, we
always had a time normally during lunch break in the office for creative
discussions. We made it a rule that we should work our minds out, nothing is
impossible we say so the rule is simple no one bringing out an idea would be
barred no matter how out of this world as it may look. This is how we solved so
many problems that allowed our company to grow from one room office space in old Rufino
building in Ayala Avenue into a multi-divisions company that occupied two floors at
the Eurovilla Building. Of course we were employees and we made money for the owner of the company.
In one of our discussion, one made a question about money.
What is money? Well of course the technical description is a medium of
exchange. But one came up with simple but compelling meaning. Money is an Idea.
He went on to say that somebody came up with an idea and invented money as a
way of getting products and services in return. I fully agreed and my reason is
simple if there are people in other planets and I bring P100 Peso bill there,
they have no use for it just like the Japanese war money during World War II.
However, if we sell to them the idea that the P100 Pesos can be used to
exchange for something of value to them on earth then it becomes acceptable.
"If Money is an idea then it follows that anyone with an
idea can make money from that idea."
While the reasoning is non-sequitur still
one cannot discount the fact that money can be made from idea. Therefore to start a
business, you need to begin with an idea. Everything starts from there and you
must believe in it that you are willing to invest in your idea. You should be
the first to invest in your own business for others to believe in it. But you may say
“I’m not a creative person, I don’t have much idea to start with.” When I say you
start with an idea it doesn’t mean your idea alone. It can be other’s idea that
you are able to convert into business. Some ideas remain just that, but other
people with keen eyes in making money can use it for his business. Another
company invented the mouse in computer and Steve Jobs saw its potential and use
it to come up with another product to sell in the market. Internet is an idea
developed by the military and intelligence of the USA; but, business people
back-ride on it and make money. Windows was not developed by Bill Gates he
bought it and made money from it to build the business Microsoft and today he is the richest man using the idea of others and turned into his own.
The thing is that ideas can be anything. Your work is to put it all up together to make business out of it and make money in the process. This separates the entrepreneur from the ordinary people. Entrepreneur is one that see something on people, things, places, events, and resources that are there but other people don't see. You don't have to be creative to be an entrepreneur. There are so many creative people and they are poor. The entrepreneur is more of a visionary with keen eyes for possibilities that create opportunities. The entrepreneur therefore is a person of possibilities not of impossibilities. He is not restricted by thoughts of failure. His thoughts are focus on what he/she can do to make things happen.
To an entrepreneur when he/she see something that can be turned to a money making enterprise, he packages it in a that will sell, start business and make money.
In Nutshell: Entrepreneurship is all about business that sells and makes money and there are three simple steps to follow
1. Generate an idea if not look for ideas that can be turned to business.
2. Work on the idea and convert it to saleable product or service.
3. Organize the business to market and sell your product or service.
Remember its not just physical product but also services. Don't make it complicated at first be simple as much as possible. Always remember starting up a business is different in running, managing and growing it up which will come much, much later.
